Summer Term Homework

There is a homework grid on Google classroom. The children are to choose a task to complete each week, unless they are given specific maths or literacy homework. The children can hand in their work electronically or on paper. We encourage children to complete their homework and hand in every Tuesday.

Spellings.

Spellings are assigned via Google Classroom on a Monday. The children have the opportunity to practice these spellings in class. However, we also encourage the children to spend some time practicing the spellings at home.

Times Tables.

The children complete timed challenges throughout the week. The children self-mark their challenges each day. We encourage the children to aim to beat their score each time. Children are encouraged to bring their challenges home to practice the multiplications they are unsure of.

Summer 2 Topic. Groundbreaking Greeks.

In the Groundbreaking Greeks project, your child will learn about different periods of Greek history, exploring the earliest civilisations, the devastation of the Dark Age and the breakthroughs and developments of the Archaic and Classical periods. They will understand how the geography of Greece affected the development of city states and explore Athens, learning about the structure of the government and society. They will get to know some of the most significant Athenians and understand why Greek art, culture, architecture, philosophy, medicine and mathematics were so significant. Your child will learn about the leadership of Alexander the Great and discover how ancient Greece became part of the Roman Empire after the Hellenistic period. They will explore how the Romans respected and developed Greek ideas, making them their own and spreading them throughout the Roman Empire. To end the project, your child will decide which was the ancient Greeks' greatest idea, and explore how the legacy of ancient Greece affects their lives today.

Outdoor Learning

We have been very lucky to have Mrs Vale in year 5 this year to take us Outdoor Learning. We have been learning about fire-lighting, making pictures out of natural materials, drawing using chalks, team-building and have taken part in meditation sessions. We are building towards den-building and are enhancing the skills we will need for this. It's lots of fun!

Class 13 Creative School Project

Class 13 have been lucky enough to be chosen to do the Arts Council of Wales' Creative School Project for this year. It is a project where creative practitioners work with individual schools to deliver a bespoke programme of learning. The schools gain access to creative professionals, their skills and resources to improve teaching and learning. It is a wonderful project to be a part of and this is now Gwauncelyn's second year of working alongside the Creative School team.

The focus for the project is to explore the culture of Wales whilst adapting the outdoor area. We are so lucky here at Gwauncelyn that we have the lovely grounds surrounding our school and we wanted them to be part of the children's learning experience. The children will be studying 'The Mabinogion' stories and will be enhancing their drama skills, literacy skills and oracy skills by working alongside Jo White. In addition to this, the children will also be working alongside Jason Hicks, who is a set designer and prop maker. It's creativity all around!

Our First Sessions with Jo!

Children In Need Day 2021

Year 5 are having a great Pudsey Day!

We have worked out with Joe Wickes, while doing a quiz! As well as working our bodies and brains, we then practised some meditation with Dr Ranj. Check out our pictures below.
