European Day of Languages
We celebrated European Day of Languages in our usual style on the 26th of September by immersing the children in a variety of language and cultural activities throughout the day. Mrs Marlow and Miss Rees were very excited all day as you can imagine!
The Nursery and Reception children came to school dressed in the colours of Wales, they sang songs in Welsh throughout the day and learnt the story of the red dragon and the reason why he is on our Welsh flag.
The Year 1 and 2 children came to school dressed in the colours of France. They played Pétanque outside, learnt the song Alouette and had a visit from Mrs Pickett, a French speaking parent, who came in to teach the children some French vocabulary and a fun French song. She also surprised the children (and the teachers) with a live link to her dad’s classroom in Montpelier! The children enjoyed singing songs in Welsh to the French children and the children in Montpelier sang some songs in French in return - fantastique! The children were also given the opportunity to ask lots of questions. What an amazing experience. I’m sure the children will remember this for a long time. Merci beaucoup Mrs Pickett!
The Year 3 and 4 children learnt about 'Las Dia de los muertos' festival and showed off their creative talents when decorating paper calaveras (skulls). They learnt the Spanish song Chuchuua and enjoyed performing it with all the funny actions. They also learnt body parts in Spanish and sang 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' in Spanish.
The Year 5 children spent the day learning about Germany. They learnt the song Das Fliegerlied and also produced some fantastic artwork in the style of the German artist Paul Klee. They enjoyed learning about Lebkuchen - a German gingerbread sold at many markets.
The Year 6 children focused their learning on Italy. They learnt the words to the Italian national anthem Fratellli d’Italia, which is by no means an easy feat, and then performed a rousing rendition that any Italian would be proud of.
This year we ended the celebrations with our very own Eurovision Song Contest in the Junior Hall where each year group sang and performed as a country the song they had learnt that day to the rest of the school.
What a wonderful day we had celebrating and immersing ourselves in languages and culture in Gwauncelyn - many thanks to our Year 6 Routes Ambassadors too for selecting the challenges for Years 3-5.
