Humanities Council

The Humanities Council at Gwauncelyn, established in 2023 to support the school's journey towards becoming a Rights Respecting School, it plays a vital role in promoting student engagement and social responsibility within the Welsh curriculum. The council meets regularly to ensure pupil influence, allowing students to voice their ideas and opinions in shaping its initiatives and activities. Members organise assemblies that celebrate a range of special days, fostering awareness of cultural and global events. By engaging in these initiatives, the Humanities Council cultivates informed, respectful individuals who appreciate diverse perspectives and are committed to making a positive impact in their local and global communities.

Humanities Council 2023-2024

In January the Humanities Council planned and presented their assembly talking about Human Rights and their target of achieving the Bronze Award and becoming a Rights Respecting School. Prior to our ‘Human Rights’ assembly, a meeting was held to discuss ideas for the assembly and what we wanted to include. Mrs Jones wrote down everyone’s ideas and tried to make sure that we did as many of them as possible on the day.

All children drew their portrait and write their name so that they could hold their identities up to highlight the right to a name and identity. We taught the children the song ‘We’ve all got rights’. All children and staff joined in and we could see that everyone had a greater awareness of both children and human rights

As a council we are aiming to raise the awareness of the diverse range of rights, and we decided to display posters around the school by linking each Progression Steps topics. For example, Year 6 are learning about conflict so we decided to display poster regarding refugees and conflict. Year 5 are looking at the age of children working in the coal mines so we decided that the article about age of children was important. We have also created a rota sharing out games and resources from UNICEF for children to use in the classroom and areas.

We've all got rights

Well what a busy end of first year for the Humanities Council! The General Election held on the 5th of July was a great opportunity to highlight governance and democracy in the UK and Cymru. The Council led an assembly detailing the range of political parties, how old people need to be to vote in the General and Senedd elections and how the whole system works in The Houses of Parliament. Children from Class 3 held their own election and created a Polling Station role play in the classroom. Class 5 and 6 children were given the opportunity to form their own party based on issues that are important to them. These issues included health, the environment, school dinners, sport and transport. Each party presented their 3 main aims and all pupils filled in a ballot paper and posted their vote in the ballot box. Da iawn and llongyfarchiadau to the Mr Med Kit party.
