Careers and Work Related Experiences - CWRE

Why CWRE Is Important in Schools and Settings

CWRE (Careers and Work-Related Experiences) plays a vital role in preparing learners for the challenges and opportunities of further education and the world of work. It supports the realisation of the four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales by helping learners become:

  • Ambitious, capable learners

  • Enterprising, creative contributors

  • Ethical, informed citizens

  • Healthy, confident individuals

From the age of 3, CWRE aims to inspire and support learners to:

  • Understand the purpose of work in their lives and its value to society.

  • Explore a wide range of opportunities, broadening their horizons and aspirations.

  • Develop positive attitudes and behaviours to overcome barriers to employability, career management, and lifelong learning.

  • Recognise the value of Welsh language skills in an evolving workplace.

  • Engage in meaningful experiences across learning, work, and entrepreneurship.

  • Build resilience and adaptability to navigate the choices, challenges, and responsibilities of life and work.

CWRE is shaped by key contributors and influences in a young person’s life. Schools and settings are encouraged to design CWRE provision that reflects these influences and supports learners in achieving the four purposes.

What Our Curriculum Council Will Be Doing This Year

This year, our Curriculum Council will continue to lead exciting work around Careers and Work-Related Experiences (CWRE) as part of our vision:

“Discover, dream, do – Learn today, Lead tomorrow.”

Their priorities include:

  • Supporting our Careers Wales Quality Award journey by gathering evidence and showcasing CWRE across the school.

  • Organising career assemblies and events to help pupils learn about different jobs and skills for the future.

  • Leading enterprise and STEM projects that link classroom learning to real-world experiences.

  • Promoting pupil voice through forums and surveys to make learning more relevant and inspiring.

  • Encouraging Welsh language and Cynefin in career-related activities to celebrate our culture and community.

  • Spotting the Four Purposes in action by recognising pupils who show ambition, creativity, ethical choices, and confidence.

Through these activities, the Curriculum Council will help every learner raise aspirations, broaden horizons, and develop the skills needed for lifelong learning and the world of work.
